Welcome =)

Computer can merely compound, at speed, the oldest problem in the relations between human beings, and in the end the communicator will be confronted with the old problem, of what to say and how to say it.

Post #6: Reflection on principles of communication/ Teamwork on programming and problem-solution projects

In this last blog post of CG1413 module, I shall reflect and talk about what I have learnt throughout this course.

First of all, I believe that this module is very comprehensive as it does not only impart theories on communications, it also give us many opportunities to practice what we learnt, which I feel is very important, because being able to apply what we learnt, is truly the ultimate goal. Below is a summary of what we had applied in our team projects, problem-solving and CG1102.

Principles of communication

My teammates and I are able to communicate effectively in our project groups and this minimized misunderstandings and also ensures that our meetings are conducted more smoothly. In most instances, we understood each other and therefore able to help each other effectively.

7Cs in writing

The knowledge of 7Cs in writing allowed my team and I to write better and more effectively for our meeting agendas and reports that we needed for our projects.

  • Courtesy
  • Correctness
  • Conciseness,
  • Clarity
  • Coherence/Cohesion,
  • Concreteness
  • Completeness–Revising, Editing, Proofreading

Interpersonal/Intercultural communication

Since my project group members are not of the same race and religion with me, there is a need to have good intercultural communication, so that misunderstandings will be prevented or minimized. Having learnt this, I am confident that I will be able to perform well next time in a intercultural group during my course of study, or work.

Principles of problem-solving approach

Having acquired this skill, my team is able to formulate effective survey and interview questions to aid us better in our problem-solving project. We had also learnt to formulate good problem statement which is important as it determine the scope and focus of our project and the ultimate goal.

Presentation skills

In this course, we learnt valuable presentation skills and also presentation planning. We have the opportunity to apply what we learnt in Oral presentation 1 and 2. After every presentation, we were evaluated by our tutors and peers and we also did reflections for ourselves. All these allowed us to recognize our own weaknesses and strengths and therefore we are able to improve ourselves after every presentation.

In conclusion, this module has been an enjoyable one and I had learnt valuable communication skills which will be beneficial to me in my remaining course of study and also when i venture into the working world next time.

à bientôt ! =)

Hi Jason,

It is good that you have provided a brief summary on the module as it will serves as background information for those who do not take the module.

I like the way you separated your reflection into different subheadings. It makes your ideas seems more organized and your blog post seems neater.

However, you may consider describing and explaining each idea based on the photo you put. For example, you may want to explain how your presentation skills have improved when you put a photo of yourself doing a presentation.

Great job on your last blog post and I really enjoyed reading your past blog posts. Good luck in your future endeavors and may God bless you!

Hi Jason,

I like how your post seems clear and concise, and your subheadings help to make reading much easier.

It is good that you explained how you applied communication skills throughout each part of the course, as many of us understand the theories and concepts behind it, but left out the application part in the process of learning. I'm glad you managed to pick out the instances where you were actually applying the things we learn for communication.

Learning how to work in an intercultural group is a great plus point in our Singapore society, since many of us come from different backgrounds and cultures. This understanding between the cultures will greatly help us to interact and build a rapport with our team mates. And its great that you managed to achieve that in this module.

And from your post, I can feel that you have gained a lot from this module, and hope these communication skills continue benefiting you in your future endeavors.

Cheers,
Cher Lia

Hi Jason,
Your post is very comprehensive in content and covers many aspects of the topic while remaining concise. A model example of the 7C’s indeed.

Separating the post into segments makes reading easier, and giving an example for each section allows insight into your experiences. I applaud you for managing to garner skills from this module and use them effectively in daily life. However, to make your post more interesting, you could use more specific examples so that the reader can truly see how this course has benefited you.

I agree that presentation skills are very critical for us. By having good presentation skills, you can remove the bad reputation that engineers have bad communication skills, and prove that you can deliver an excellent presentation that will impress all who see it.

I wish you all the best for your finals.

Regards,
Kimberly

Hi Jason,

I like the way you separate your post into different skills you picked up or improved on during the whole course. By doing so, you had summarised most of the skills learnt and it can give others a general idea of what to expect from taking this module. The table used also gave a clearer view of the skills learnt and what it comprises of.

In your post, you also gave examples of when to use each skill and how it can be applied to not only tasks in this module but also in other areas as well. This is useful, as it helps us to recall when we applied each skill and refreshes our memory on how to apply it.

I agree that learning about the principles of problem solving is very useful. Most of the time, issues that we feel that are problems is not really a problem. Often, we do not think of why is it a problem, and also not consider if anything has been done to it. Even if we had identified a real problem for our problem solving project, we have to come out with solutions, and have to consider if our solution will create more problems. Before taking this module, we would, more often than not, not consider if our solution will create bigger problems.

Lastly, from your long list of skills learnt, I can see that you benefitted greatly from this module. I hope that you will continue to apply these skills not only when doing projects but in your daily life as well.

Hi Jason,

Firstly, I would like to express my appreciation to you as a fantastic CG1102 groupmate as well as a friend in CEG. You have made contributions that far exceeded the expectations that I, as our group leader, had placed on you. Thank you for going through with our group, C06A, the tough process of programming as well as the numerous meetings, online or in school, for the lab assignments.

No doubt I agreed that without completing this module, we would not have open our eyes to a much neglected basic skill of a human: communicating effectively. In your reflection you have mostly covered what we have learnt from this module, which was rewarding and a major stepping stone to the future project modules that we are required to take. You have done well in explaining each concept learnt in this module, and it thoroughly follows the 7Cs of writing.

Perhaps you could have explored more on the benefits of keeping an academic blog, for example on its usefulness of practising the concepts of 7Cs. In addition, the new knowledge in using the wiki would have been an useful reflection to be done in this blog post.

Last but not least, do your very best for this end-of-semester exams! Hope we all get the result of our dreams!

Brandon
